The number of domain name disputes hit a record-high for the ninth-consecutive year in 2022, based on an early look at data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which is the largest provider for cases under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).
I provide more data and details in a new video on YouTube.
Among other things, I explain in the video:
Cases at WIPO were up 11.85 percent, reaching 5,736 — more than double the number from 2015.
The total number of domain names in those cases rose 9.07 percent, to 9,569.
WIPO has now administered 61,405 domain name disputes since 1999 — just over two years after announcing its 50,000th case.
In the video, I also explore several reasons for the increase in cybersquatting activity and provide some optimism for trademark owners by noting that they won more than 96 percent of all cases in 2022, up from the all-time success rate of just under 91 percent.
