Doug Isenberg Attends Meeting of WIPO Domain Name Panelists in Geneva

Doug Isenberg attended the annual meeting of domain name panelists at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 6, 2023.

About 120 domain name attorneys from 31 countries attended the meeting.

The annual meeting provides an opportunity for panelists to discuss issues related to the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and related topics. WIPO is the largest of the UDRP service providers approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and, according to the most recent issue of GigaLaw’s Domain Dispute Digest, is on track to handle a record number of cybersquatting cases for the tenth consecutive year.

In addition to his work with WIPO, Doug also serves as a panelist for all of the other ICANN-approved domain name dispute providers.

Doug Isenberg Facilitates UDRP Panelist Training Workshop

Attorney Doug Isenberg of The GigaLaw Firm recently facilitated a training workshop for panelists under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), which was organized by the Canadian International Internet Dispute Resolution Centre (CIIDRC).

The four-hour event, attended by UDRP panelists from around the world, provided an opportunity for participants to further their knowledge about both substantive and procedural issues under the UDRP.

In addition to Doug, the other facilitators for the workshop were Steve Levy and Zak Muscovitch, who, like Doug, serve as UDRP panelists for the CIIDRC.

Doug Isenberg Quoted in Legaltech News Article About .ai Domain Name Disputes

Attorney Doug Isenberg of The GigaLaw Firm was quoted extensively in an article on the Legaltech News website about .ai domain name disputes.

The article, “Examining .ai Domains and Their Additional IT, Compliance and Legal Requirements,” was published on September 25, 2023. It discusses the increase in domain name registrations and disputes related to .ai, a country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Anguilla, a British territory in the Caribbean.

The .ai ccTLD, of course, coincidentally reflects the abbreviation for “artificial intelligence.”

In the article, Doug discusses restrictions on the use of .ai domain names, applicability of the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) to .ai domain names, and recommendations for trademark owners to craft strong UDRP complaints for .ai domain names.

Among other things, the article says:

About 42 countries, including Anguilla, have adopted the UDRP. “If there is an .ai domain dispute, it’s not necessary for the trademark owner to have a trademark registration in Anguilla,” Isenberg stated. “If the complainant has trademark rights in the U.S. or any other market, that would be sufficient to bring the dispute.”

In addition to the Legaltech News article, Doug has recently published the following videos about the rise of AI and its relationship to domain name disputes:
