Facebook emailed its American members to tell them that they may be eligible for a share of the funds if their names, profile pictures or photographs were used in one of the website’s so-called "sponsored stories." The sponsored stories are at the heart of Facebook’s business model, and effectively turn ordinary interaction on the website, such as people commenting on a product or liking a service, into adverts by republishing it in the main “timeline” news feed.
