The United States Patent and Trademark Office has decided that one of the smartphone patents at the center of the legal dispute between Apple and Samsung Electronics — which resulted in a jury award to Apple of $1.05 billion — should never have been granted. The patent office decision is an initial ruling and probably will be challenged by Apple.
