Doug Isenberg of The GigaLaw Firm gave a presentation on “Why Domain Name Disputes Are at an All-Time High” at the MarkMonitor Summit in New York on May 7, 2019.

In his presentation, Doug noted that a record number of complaints were filed at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) in 2018. Doug also explored other trends under the UDRP and attributed the increased activity to a number of factors, including the rise in overall domain name registrations, the increasing importance of top-level domain names, obstacles created by the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the growing domain name industry, and trademark owners’ recognition of the UDRP’s strengths.

Other speakers at the MarkMonitor Summit included representatives from Amazon, Salesforce, eBay, and more. The keynote speaker was Brian Krebs, an independent investigative reporter who writes about cybercrime and is probably best known for breaking stories on high-profile data breaches, including those that hit Target, Home Depot, Michaels, and Ashley Madison.
